Now approaching my 76th birthday, I have been an active Yankee fan since I was eight years old (1947). Thus, I got to see Mickey’s career from beginning to end.
I still recall the day when he became the unsurpassed baseball icon of my life. It was near the end of the 1952 season when the Yanks were playing Boston in a double-header in Fenway Park. During that day, Mick tore up Boston pitching in each game. Late in the second game, after he had already homered and had gotten on base all afternoon, Mickey hit a line drive to center field. The ball hit the the top of the flagpole and bounced back onto the field, still in play. With his astonishing speed, he was able to leg out a triple. But I was chagrined that he had the bad luck of losing a home run for the hit. I saw him as immensely talented but snake-bitten from that point onward.
I have never changed my mind about that appraisal.
If I may, let me conjecture about a career that could have been if not impeded by three major factors. First, the obvious impediment – the multitude of injuries that would have crushed the careers of any other player to put on the uniform. (The doctors called Mickey a ‘neuro-muscular genius whose physical abilities were unlike any they had ever seen, and who was capable of playing through pain and achieving amazing results.)
Second, regrettably, Mickey’s own indulgences off the field – mainly his heavy drinking that certainly did him no good on the playing field.
And finally, the home ballpark, the original Yankee Stadium whose outfield dimensions were so cavernous that they were called “Death Valley” by players and pundits alike. A researcher recently published his findings that showed that Mickey Mantle averaged 25 balls per year that were hit more than 425 in Yankee Stadium and caught. CAUGHT! In 1957 alone, I counted over thirty drives caught beyond 430 feet. What would The Mick have done in today’s ball parks? Barry Bonds would not be holding the all-time home run record.
Just a few names of players who made their career catches against Mick out in center field: Cal Abrams (banged his head against the center field wall catching a ball Mick hit off Turley in 1954), Chuck Deering, Jim Busby, Jim Piersal, and in right field, Al Kaline took 7 would-be homers out of the stands against Mickey.
I could go on and on about Mick’s achievements that were diminished by the three factors listed above. Obviously, I have been a genuine fanatic for number 7, but despite my respect and admiration for the great athletes playing in today’s game, I have yet to see anyone who matches the sheer abilities of Mickey Mantle.
Thanks for the chance to rant,
Ray Amore Ph.D.
Mickey was my idol and I saw him play a many of times. I am 69 and I lived in Lakeland,Fla from 1960-62 and saw him play in Henley Field against the Tigers in Spring Training,up close and personal. My brother Steve touched his arm in 1961! I told him not to wash his hand ever again, unfortunately my Mom intervened.
In 1961 Spring training he hit a line drive to CF that the center fielder caught in front of him with his glove at his chest, he was standing near the warning track over 400′ from Home Plate. I never saw the ball in flight. In 1963, we went to a game at DC Stadium and saw Mick hit two homers that were blistering line drives left handed. One of them hit 25′ up on the scoreboard in right center, about 425′ from the plate, it bounced way back into the outfield. I never saw the ball in flight. A friend told me he went to DC Stadium and saw Mick pull a ball foul over the left field roof batting right handed. Mickey Mantle was the most powerful hitter in the history of baseball. If he had been healthy his whole career he would have been the greatest player of all time!
Correction,I think it was 1962 not 1963 on those two homers off Tom Cheney at DC Stadium.
THE MICK IS GONE NOW 22 YEARS PLUS. I REMEMBER EARLY 60S AM LITTLE LEAGUER FROM CHARLESTON SOUTH CAROLINE . THE MICK WAS MY IDOL watching HIM HIT HOMERUNS ON NATIONAL GAMES BROADCASTED . TODAY AM 67 YEARS OLD and BASEBALL NO LONGER MY PASSION. THE MEMORIES OF MICKEY MANTLE STILL HOLDING IN MY MIND MEMORIES. EVERY THING IN LIFE COMES TO PAST. MY FATHER IS GONE SINCE 2000 . RONNIE, WAS THAT OLD TIMERS DAY CELEBRATING THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1941 WORLD SERIES? IF SO I WAS THERE AND MANTLE HIT A GRAND SLAM, RIGHT-HANDED, INTO THE UPPER DECK IN RIGHT FIELD. REMEMBER THOSE 1.50 GEN. ADMISSION SEATS. HIT OFF OF MARCELINO LOPEZ OF THE THEN L,A, ANGELS.
Mick was my childhood idol though I never saw him play. I could never see him in person though I only lived 90 miles away.
I loved the Mick like a god. I started following baseball in 1955 as a young kid who had no athletic mentors. Mickey and the Yankees never failed me. Year after year they won and I cheered them on. I cried when the Mick was injured, I wept in joy when he succeeded. I got to see him play once again the then Los Angeles Angels. No home run that day, but a ground rule double. Never forget that game, seeing my hero in action. I remember praying that he would hit a home run in another TV game; and he did. The lady of the house tsk-tsked me for such a childish prayer wish, but I was not denied. Also, I remember his home run against Barney Shultz in the World Series. They brought in Shultz to pitch to Mantle. I listened to the warm up pitches, then the wind up and the pitch, knocked it into the stands. Most electrifying player of his day and of my lifetime.
I was listening to the Yankee v. K.C. game at the kitchen table in K.C. on the radio in 1963; when Mantle homered off of Bill Fischer in the 11th inning. I was 12 years old. I have been a Yankee Fan since 1960 because of Mickey Mantle. I rushed to the newsstand early the next morning after aforementioned game, and bought the paper. The Kansas City Star had a photograph of Mantle and the flight of home run on the front page of the sports page that day. It was a line drive and the ball was still going up when it struck the upper facade at the stadium. it missed by inches going out of Yankee Stadium. the ball was reported to have traveled 500 feet. I told that story to a kid at the new Yankee July 2019. we were sitting in the lower level down the right field in box seats. I want go into the walk off homer against Bob Gibson in the third game of the 1964 World Series, and I saw him take Sandy Koufax(Dodgers) deep in the 4th game of the 1963 World Series. The guy had a flair for the dramatic. See you!
