NEW YORK – (November 11, 2013)

The Mickey Mantle family announced that the online auction of baseball icon Mickey Mantle’s 1960 New York Yankees contract has raised $40,000 for the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund. The Relief Fund, chaired by New Jersey First Lady Mary Pat Christie, has awarded more than $25 million to ninety-three non-profit organizations active in New Jersey’s recovery and rebuilding efforts.

“We are most grateful to Dan and David Mantle for their support and donation,” said Mary Pat Christie, chair of the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund. “Although life-long Texas residents, the Mantle Family called New Jersey home for 18-years while their Dad played with the New York Yankees. We appreciate their loyalty to the Garden State and generous support of the Relief Fund’s efforts.”

The winning bid for Mantle’s contract was made by Ken Goldin of Clearwater Beach, Florida. All proceeds from the sale will be used to address housing needs caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Mickey Mantle’s youngest son, Dan Mantle, said, “Our Dad was very active in charity endeavors throughout his life. He taught us to always help those in need. Our donation of the proceeds from the sale of Dad’s original Yankees contract is a way for us to provide direct assistance to our former neighbors and victims of Hurricane Sandy.”

Bracewell & Giuliani Senior Counsel Drew Kastner, serving as the Mantle Family attorney, worked pro bono to organize the auction with Brandon Steiner, CEO of Steiner Sports, in New Rochelle, New York. “Mickey Mantle memorabilia is perpetually among the most legendary in the industry,” said Brandon Steiner, who conducted the auction. “We were honored to donate our services for such a worthy cause.”

The Mickey Mantle Family has a long history of charitable work, beyond fundraising for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. When Mantle received his liver transplant in 1995, he and the Family created the Mickey Mantle Organ Donation Foundation to raise awareness of the need for organ donors. After losing two brothers to cancer, the Family also worked with the American Cancer Society to create the Mickey Mantle Family Fund, with all proceeds going to the Hope Lodge of New York City.
